Fresh Air Remembers Maurice Sendak

– Went Tag Sale Crazy with two big ones this weekend: Minks to Sinks and Darien Boy Scouts (the latter was a last minute decision when we decided to go a half hour before it closed… helloooooo discounts).

– Pictured above: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, Promises to Keep,  and a design poster from 1979  /  ”distressed” Made in Italy bar stool, fruit basket, books, mugs, and decoupage bowl  /  a little surprise inside each mug  /  The Dive from Clausen’s Pier, The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living, The Moon and Six Pence, Cat’s Cradle, and Timothy or Notes of an Abject Reptile.

– Celebrated Cinco de Mayo with my best friend over sangria and chips and salsa!

– Watched Our Idiot Brother and giggled away at Paul Rudd.

– Got some exciting news (that will of course mean more work, but well worth it!).

– Made progress on Meg Wolitzer’s The Position. Has anyone read anything by her? Looking for opinions.

Tomorrow (Saturday), drag you lawn chairs outside to an open space and sit in the vast wonderment of the supermoon. A supermoon occurs when the moon is at the point in its orbit when it will be closer to the Earth than at any other point this year. I was never a big fan of Sci-Fi, but think these moon-inspired covers would look just beautiful on my shelf.

So, I’ve come to the staggering realization that in just a few short years, I will have lived for 3 decades on this planet. And, as I am a perpetual list maker, I decided to follow the steps of Yes and Yes (scroll down, on right sidebar), Sofia’s Journal, and Vienna Waits by making a ## Before ## List.

I’m not prepared to share the entire list here, as it ranges from the mundane (#6: Lose 10 lbs, #5: Establish a steady salary, save money to my bank account and create a budget) to the aspirational (#2: Get up at 6AM every day, #4: Begin collecting an artist– even if it’s just prints!, #22: Publish a story/article in a national magazine) to the deeply personal (yup, not sharing those). I’m keeping the list in a place that I can see every day, reminding me to take the steps necessary to accomplish my goals. I am GREAT with making lists, but horrible at follow through for an extended period of time (which, coincidentally, is #14 on my list).

Well, I have a new favorite drink. It is spicy and salty and deliciously Mexican. It is called the Michelada.

Just picture it. A Saturday. It’s late in the afternoon and you’re on a back porch, with the sun coming at you through the trees. You can smell the salt water and hear ocean waves in the distance. Playing softly, the faint sound of the guitar. Next to you, is a frosty concoction of beer, tomato juice, lime, salt, and spices. You smile coyly at the boy in cargo shorts and plaid shirt sitting next to you as you push back your sunglasses and begin turning pages of Women and Writing by Virginia Woolf…

Whoa, I lost myself their for a minute. Nevertheless, let me talk to you about the wonder of the Michelada. It originated in Mexico and can come in any number of variations, depending on the city you’re sipping in. Typically, the essential ingredients are salt, lime, tomato/Clamato juice, beer, and hot sauce. You can have a Chelada, which is just salt and lime with beer, or a Michelada cubano which is salt, lime, beer, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and chilis. You can salt-rim the glass, or leave it free and clear. Essentially, it’s like Bloody Mary’s slightly simpler but much more fun cousin who “is much more street smart than book smart.”

What I created tonight was a poor-woman’s Michelada, with only salt, lime juice, a dash of Tabasco, tomato juice, and Corona. Typically, you want a darker beer, like a Modelo Negro. Still, it was entirely satisfying and made for a wonderful night sitting on my comforter, catching up with New Girl.

– Went out for a much-needed beer at my favorite “Irish” pub.

– Found treasures at a fantastic estate sale; including a hand painted wooden cutting board, coffee cup inscribed with “let me stimulate you”; and a Roberta Flack record.

– Satisfied my frozen yogurt craving with a pomegranate/original/dulce de leche flavored concoction covered with gummy bears, fruit, and Reece’s pieces. Sugar rush, ahoy!

– Traveled up to Boston (briefly) to attend the opera. My sister sang one of the main roles! Go Mae!

– Dined at the historic Jacob Wirth‘s with the fam (though, the company was much better than the food).

– Celebrated my father’s birthday!

– Passed through a few quaint Connecticut towns, stopped at antique stores and farmer’s markets to amass a small but amazing collection of flower and homemade yummies.

– Visited the studio of Jonathan Prince, one of the newest artists represented at the gallery, to select works for our May 18th show!
