Ah Vermont. For a week every year, the family drops everything we are doing to caravan together up to the Green State. We rent a big house on a lake, and take 7 days to bonfire, BBQ, swim, hike, shop, and ridicule the hell out of me. And I love every second of it.
I’ve taken four books with me this week, and I’m determined to finish at least three:
The Beautiful and the Damned by F Scott Fitzgerald (Drunk Lit Book Club’s July selection!)
Outliers by Malcom Gladwell
Oh The Glory of It All by Sean Wilsey
The 12 Million Dollar Shark by Don Thompson
My RADD has kicked in the past few weeks, simply because I haven’t had the time to read. What’s frustrating to me, is that for a time, I didn’t really miss it. How can you not miss reading? I don’t know if I just needed the mental break, some time without words on a page, to get over whatever hump I was on… but now, it’s a little distressing to me to know that there are moments in my life where a good book does not make all the difference. I’ve never had that before, have you?
However, now that I have an opportunity to relax, I’m using this moment to get back into reading. Currently, I’m alternating between Thompson’s book (a truly interesting, riveting take on the economics of contemporary art– I highly recommend it as I’m learning so much and am only 25 pages in) and the Fitzgerald (in these moments I pretend the lake house in VT is actually a summer mansion in Newport). What’s on your vacation reading list?

I’ve had several times in my life where a good book just didn’t do the trick for me. In those times I’ve turned to other things I’m passionate about, like music or hiking. I’ve found that a good vacation always brings me back to reading though! As far as my vacation reading list, I’m going to the town I normally live in when I’m in school for a three days this weekend and I’m considering it a vacation especially since there is going to be a festival in town. I plan on reading The Polysyllabic Spree and Housekeeping Vs. The Dirt by Nick Hornby as well as Envy by Anna Godbersen, the third novel in the Luxe series.
Ash’s comment has reminded me of my copy of Slam, by N. Hornby, which I should’ve read ages ago, but I plan on starting with The Solitude of Prime Numbers, a birthday gift from last year which should be read before this year’s b-day, right? The next volumes… I expect a surprise while glancing my shelves. Enjoy Vermont!
One book on my summer reading list is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It’s one of those books that everybody seems to have read and everybody seems to like, but I just can’t get into it. Another book on my list is Huckleberry Finn. Good luck on your reading list!
Oh, sounds like a splendid vacation! How are you liking “Outliers”? I’ve read a couple of Malcom’s books and really enjoyed them, though they may not be favorites that I’d go to again and again, they’re quite interesting.
Belated thanks for your comment! <3
