BUY ME THIS: Kerouac and Updike’s Typewriters

print by Volume Twenty Five at Etsy.com

I really need to check the Christie’s auction pages more often.

Jack Kerouac’s Hermes 3000 just sold for $22,5000, while John Updike’s typewriter went for $4,375.

I would have killed for Cormac McCarthy’s Olivetti (mostly because I love Olivettis), but that thing fetched more that I will ever make in my entire lifetime.  And that’s including the Roth IRA I have, as of yet, failed to open.

  1. I have absolutely zero affection for typewriters. Which I think will get me ostracized from the community of literature lovers? It’s just a hunk of metal! The beauty is on the pages, in the words!

That said, if you really wanted the same experience, you could just buy an Olivetti identical to Cormac McCarthy’s and just explain that you got the exact same type of typewriter he uses. The article you link to says he just paid $11 plus $19.95 shipping for his replacement Olivetti. Isn’t that a lot cheaper than gutting your non-existent Roth IRA?
